Musing no. 11 - The power of a cuff

Cuffs have always felt like armor to me.
Not the heavy kind….but the kind you choose to put on.
A quiet strength. A grounding presence. A reminder of who you are.
Most of our cuffs are malleable, meant to become yours.
They’re not rigid. They’re responsive….just like us.
When you first wear one, gently shape it to your wrist from either end, then slide your wrist in and out rather than pulling it open and closed each time. This preserves the integrity of the metal and helps prevent stress, fractures, or breakage over time. Once it’s shaped to you, it remembers.
The cuff I’m wearing here is our Large Stingray Cuff, the very first design Ashley and I created together for Alkemie. It holds so much meaning for me. It’s made in reclaimed sterling silver, and like most of my work, I love mixing metals, but sterling has a depth and honesty that felt right for the beginning.

We’ve always been drawn to texture….how light hits it, how it feels against the skin, how it tells a story without saying a word. Stingray has this incredible, almost lunar surface~organic, ancient, imperfect in the best way. For the very first prototype, we took a piece from an old antique stingray bag and used it to cast the form. That history, that previous life, became part of the piece from the start.
Once the cuff was formed, we decided to do something unexpected. We took a blow torch and burned a hole straight through the metal, intentionally exposing skin beneath. That moment changed everything. When you wear it, your skin becomes part of the design~light passes through, movement shows, breath lives inside the piece. It felt intimate. Alive. Alchemical.
When we finished that cuff, we both knew this is something special…
It was the moment we understood the collection before the collection even existed.
To this day, it’s still my favorite cuff. The one I reach for instinctively. The one that feels like home on my body.
Styling-wise, I love contrast.
I often wear one arm stacked ,a cuff paired with bangles for weight and presence…while the other arm stays softer with our leather wraps, wrapped once or twice, depending on the day. Metal and leather. Strength and fluidity. Structure and ease.
Cuffs are timeless. They don’t shout. They hold.
They ground energy. They frame the wrist. They turn even the simplest outfit into something intentional.
These aren’t just accessories.
They’re companions.
And our large stingray cuff/CF1 will always remind me where Alkemie began~
with texture, fire, reclaimed beauty, and a deep knowing that we were building something real.
xx, Dara
