Musing 13 - Turning something common into something precious

Alkemie is the art of transformation, turning the ordinary into the extraordinary, the common into something precious. We chose the phonetic spelling of that ancient word, alkemie, because it reflects exactly what we do with our hands and our hearts.
We find treasures along the way, pieces from nature, fragments of vintage origin, forgotten objects with quiet histories, and we give them a new life as wearable art. A leaf discovered in our driveway becomes a cuff. Roses cut from my dad’s garden are transformed into a bangle. An old jar lid evolves into a buckle. Even the oldest lace from my grandmother has been reimagined into three different cuffs, carrying her story forward in metal and memory.
Our pieces are cast in reclaimed metal, a blend with zero nickel, zero lead and no plating. Everything is designed in Topanga Canyon and handmade in Los Angeles, shaped slowly, intentionally, with reverence for what came before.
The alkemie doesn’t stop with the jewelry. Step into our shop and you’ll see that almost everything has lived another life. An old key cabinet now holds curiosities. Vintage beverage crates cradle our cuffs. A typeset drawer from another era displays our rings. Each display, like each piece of jewelry, carries a past, something it was before becoming what it is now.
This is our practice, to notice what the world overlooks, to honor its story, and to transform it into something that can be worn close to the heart. That is alkemie. Turning something common into something precious.
We would love to welcome you into our Topanga Canyon shop to share the stories in person and show you the beauty of what transformation can become.
